Instrument Rating Prerequisites
  1. Prerequisites

    CFR 61.65d

    q PIC XC: 50 hours PIC cross-country.

    q IFR Time: 40 hours simulated or actual instrument time (no more than 20 in sim or FTD).

    q Dual Received: 15 hours IFR instruction.

    q Cross-Country (dual):

    q 1 IFR XC at least 250 nm

    q 3 different types of IFR approaches.

    q Current (dual):3 hours within 2 calendar months (61.109)

    CFR 141 (Appendix C)

    q Ground Training: 30 hours of ground training.

    q Flight Training: 35 hours instrument training (no more than 50% in flight sim or 40% in FTD).

    q Cross-Country:

    q 1 IFR XC at least 250 nm.

    q 1 segment 100 nm straight line.

    q 3 different types of IFR approaches.

    q Current: 3 hours within 60 days.

  2. Endorsements Required for the Checkride

    q Prerequisites for practical test: Part 61, § 61.39(a)(6)(i) and (ii):
    I certify that [Name] has received and logged training time within 2 calendar-months preceding the month of application in preparation for the practical test and he/she is prepared for the Instrument [Airplane] practical test.

    q Review of deficiencies identified on airman knowledge test: § 61.39(a)(6)(iii) as required. I certify that [Name] demonstrated satisfactory knowledge of the subject areas in which he/she was deficient by the FAA airman knowledge test report.

    q Flight proficiency/practical test: §§ 61.65 (a)(6). I certify that [Name] has received the required training in accordance with §§ 61.65 (c)(d). I have determined he/she is prepared for the Instrument [Airplane] practical test.

    q Aeronautical knowledge test: §§ 61.35(a)(1), 61.65 (a)(b). I certify that [Name] has received the required training in accordance with § 61.65 (b). I have determined he/she is prepared for the Instrument [Airplane] knowledge test.
